Our Center for Vaccine Development (CVD) and our labs are interested in pursuing projects aimed at gaining a better understanding of mosquito-borne diseases, leading to the design of improved methods to detect, prevent or treat these diseases. For instance, CVD forms part of one of the centers within the Research and Development of Vaccines and Monoclonal Antibodies (ReVAMPP) network, a U.S.-based research network designed to conduct fundamental basic to translational research to advance vaccines against peribunyaviruses such as Oropouche and Cash Valley viruses. These under-researched emerging infections threaten to spread into the more populated areas of the United States, Canada and Mexico. Moreover, our epidemiology team is continuously working with public health departments to monitor the special and seasonal dynamics of endemic and emerging mosquito species in Texas and elsewhere worldwide.
