Our lab uses electrophysiological recordings to probe the neural bases of cognition, with a focus on reward and executive control, including self-control. We are especially interested in the anterior and posterior cingulate cortices, as well as the orbitofrontal cortex. We are also interested in the neural basis of flexible cognition and in the neural representation of concepts. Ultimately, our research is grounded in the desire to treat psychiatric diseases, especially depression, anxiety, and addiction.

Primary Investigator

Dr. Benjamin Hayden is a Professor of Neurosurgery at ÌÇÐÄvlogÃÛÌÒ of Medicine. His research focuses on using measures of spiking activity of neurons in the human brain to answer questions related to reward, decision-making, and executive control. He is also interested in understanding the basic cognitive processes underlying anxiety, depression, and bipolar disorder. He is especially interested in naturalistic behavior, and his work is distinguished by an emphasis on novel statistical analyses to infer latent cognitive processes in complex behaviors.
